Spirit of Leadership by Myles Munroe (Summary, Notes and Insights)

The Book In Three Sentences

  • Every human regardless of gender or genealogy is born with the inherent ability to become a leader, this ability is the leadership spirit.
  • Although everyone has the leadership spirit, no one will ever truly become a leader until they develop the spirit of leadership (the needed attitude to lead).
  • The purpose of the leadership spirit and spirit of leadership is to serve humanity (fulfilling purpose) not to dominate anyone.

What is Leadership?

According to Myles Munroe, leadership is the capacity to influence others through inspiration motivated by a passion, generated by a vision, produced by a conviction, ignited by a purpose.

Leadership is influence; influencing people to join you in something you are passionate about (not forcing or compelling anyone).

From this definition, the requirements for leadership are: a purpose, a conviction of that purpose, a vision towards that purpose, passion in pursuing that vision. Once this is in place, it inspires and influences others to join the leader in pursuing that passion. This is how leadership forms.

Are Leaders Born or Made?

Everyone was born to lead but you must become a leader. Leaders are ordinary people who accept or are placed in extraordinary circumstances that bring forth their latent potential, producing a character that inspires confidence and trust within others.

Being born to lead is a response to the leadership spirit within you while becoming a leader is adopting the spirit of leadership (the needed attitude that makes leaders)

Is Leadership A Skill?

True leadership is not a skill (a method, a technique or a science), but an attitude. However if you define skill as an ability that is learned, leadership can be considered a skill, in that the attitude of leadership is one that can be learned or developed.

The heart of leadership is the heart (your mindset).

Myths About Leadership

1. Leaders are made not born
2. Leadership is a other-worldly arrangement on specific individuals
3. Leadership is a result of a charismatic personality
4. Leadership is a result of a forceful personality
5. Leadership is a result of specific leadership trainings

How To Develop the Spirit of Leadership

The most important step in developing the spirit of leadership, after your awareness that you are born to lead, is to renewing your mind.

You aren’t renewing your mind to the newest philosophy or trends but to what God thinks about you.

For the renewal of your mind to be effective, you have to commit patiently to allow the new information from the Creator to settle into your subconscious mind through hearing and rehearing. It is the Holy Spirit (the spirit of truth) that guides us into changing our mindset to the truth.

If Everyone Is A Leader, Who Then Will Follow?

Since leadership is influencing others to join as we passionately serve others through the release of our gift and fulfillment of our purpose, our leadership is a joint leadership.

God has given every one a gift and we are to be leaders in that gifting– passionately pursuing the use of that gift to benefit humanity. You don’t necessarily have to be at the forefront of an army or a big corporation to be a leader. You can lead in your gifting within or following another person’s leadership.

While someone is leading in their gifting by pastoring a church, a “follower” can lead in her gifting by singing in the choir, and another lead in their gifting by organizing the environment of the church and so on.

Servant Leadership

Leadership is not dominion over other humans. God gave us a command to have dominion over the earth and the creatures in it, not over humans.

Instead, leadership is service. Serving humanity by fulfilling your purpose (the specific contribution which God has created and wired you to add to the earth).

In other to truly fulfill God’s command to dominate the earth, we must serve each other with by fulfilling God’s purpose for our lives.
